Thrombosis and Embolism Risk and Precautions in Aesthetic Surgery

When it comes to plastic surgery, the same risks of thrombosis and embolism apply as they do for any other procedure. In addition to heart surgery, an embolism can occur in orthopedic, brain, and urology procedures, resulting in unfavorable outcomes. When the situation is aesthetically pleasing, on the other hand, this is most often seen in the media, on social media, and on television channels.

As a starting point, we should talk about the risks associated with emboli and deep vein thrombosis (bbl) surgery, liposuction, and tummy tucks, among other procedures.

What is Thrombosis?

Thrombosis is the term used to describe the blockage of a deep vein in the legs caused by a blood clot, to put it simply. In fact, the clot can be thought of as the body’s most fundamental defense mechanism. When bleeding occurs as a result of an injury or for any other reason, what we call a clot forms to stop the bleeding. It aids in the stopping of the bleeding by intensifying the area where the bleeding has occurred.

Thrombosis is a condition in which an excessive amount of blood clot forms and the clot blocks the vessel. There are a variety of factors that contribute to this situation.

It is critical that the doctor and his team take all necessary precautions before and after the plastic surgery procedure, and that the patient follows all of the instructions given to him or her before and after the procedure.

What is an embolism?

The movement of the clot is what causes the occlusion of the vascular system. In a nutshell, it is a condition in which arteries become blocked and vital organs are deprived of oxygen and blood supply. The most common types of embolism are pulmonary embolism and brain embolism, respectively.

What Causes Thrombosis?

The following are the factors that contribute to the formation of thrombosis following plastic surgery or for other reasons.

Tell Your Doctor About Your Coagulation and Thrombosis Problem

It is important to inform your doctor if you have a coagulation or thrombosis disease that is either genetic or acquired prior to surgery. This information should be shared with the surgeon at the time of the surgery’s planning stage if you have any reservations about the procedure or have a history of thrombosis in your previous surgeries. Your Aesthetic and Plastic Surgeon may advise you to have the following blood tests performed in your country before traveling to the United States for the procedure.

Are blood thinners given after the surgery?

Not every patient who undergoes plastic surgery is prescribed blood thinners or other medications. The patient must have a known coagulation problem in order to qualify for this treatment. Surgery procedures such as liposuction, bbl, and tummy tuck, in particular, are associated with a high risk of blood loss. This is why patients are advised not to consume blood thinners for a specified period of time prior to the procedure.

As a result, patients undergoing plastic surgery who are at high risk of bleeding are not always prescribed blood thinners or other medications. Consequently, the patient’s risk of bleeding increases, with the possibility of active bleeding occurring as a result. This has the potential to have tragic consequences.

In the course of the patient’s preoperative examinations, tests such as the bleeding time and the clotting time are performed. Anesthesiologists perform these examinations prior to surgery to determine if there is anything that could prevent you from having your surgery. Following the evaluation of these values, your plastic surgeon will determine whether or not to administer blood thinner treatment following the surgery.

What should we do to reduce the risk of embolism?

Embolism is a risk associated with all surgical procedures. The risk is higher in operations such as hip replacements and knee replacements, among other procedures.

In the case of aesthetic surgery, there is a risk of embolism. Please explain what the patient should do to reduce the risk of developing this condition.

  • – Get Moving

It is critical to take immediate action to prevent embolism from occurring. When it comes to aesthetic surgeries, procedures such as liposuction, Brazilian butt lift, and tummy tuck are the ones that take the longest to complete. Because of the effects of anesthesia, the patient is immobile during this time period. It is critical that the patient be transported approximately 4 hours after the operation is completed. Blood clots can occur for a variety of reasons, the most common of which is abnormal blood circulation.

Patients who experience fainting spells during their first walk should seek medical attention. After a short rest, you should try to be as strong as possible to walk again. Walking is a great way to get your body moving and stimulate it.
It is important to remember to drink plenty of water. Drinking plenty of water will assist you in getting rid of edema and swelling more quickly, as well as increasing your mobility.

After having plastic surgery, you may be required to stay in the hospital for one or two nights. Do not forget to walk and move your legs as much as possible during this process. This should be done every hour or every two hours.

  • – Quit Smoking Before Surgery

Smoking is another factor that increases the risk of embolism. Atherosclerosis is the most serious health hazard associated with smoking. A person who is at risk of developing atherosclerosis also has a very high risk of developing embolism. You should refrain from smoking for at least 15 days prior to and for at least 15 days following surgery.

  • – Move on the Plane

It is believed that immobility is the most common cause of emboli. Patients who have undergone surgery in another country must travel long distances by plane to return to their home countries. Trips lasting more than 3 hours, in particular, can result in an embolism.

Make an effort to secure an airplane seat on the aisle side. Try to get up and move around as much as possible until the plane takes off. 30 minutes after the plane takes off, take short walks in a corridor to clear your head and clear your mind. Increase the flow of blood in your body.

  • – Do Not Take Off Your Surgery Stockings!

It is important that you keep your emboli stockings on until you get home. They were placed on before the surgery. Do not forget to bring these socks with you on your plane trip, as they will help to reduce the risk of embolism. Using these low-pressure stockings will help to reduce the risk of embolism while you are inactive.
